COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Rochester Salvation Army staff and volunteers prepared a full traditional Thanksgiving feast at the Social Services Center for the expected 150-200 guests served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The meal features turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green beans, and pies with help from Scheels and is open to everyone.  KIMT
  • Olmsted County announced that a drive-thru light experience called the Employers of Olmsted Light Festival (E.L.F.) will open at Chester Woods Park. The free event, sponsored by local businesses, will run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. from December 5 until December 21.  KTTC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Between midnight and 11:30 a.m. on November 26, the Minnesota State Patrol reported hundreds of accidents on Minnesota roads due to a major snowfall during Thanksgiving travel—statewide numbers include 218 property damage crashes and 33 jackknifed semi-trucks with no injuries in southern Minnesota.  KIMT

  • Rochester International Airport said it is business as usual this holiday season with a 6% annual rise and a 10% increase in travelers—passengers planning Christmas flights should check schedules for changes.  KTTC

  • Today, a Campbell’s survey shows that Minnesota diners favor side dishes this Thanksgiving with stuffing topping the list — turkey remains the top product in the state — highlighting a shift in local holiday meal traditions.  KROC-AM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, a survey by the American Farm Bureau shows that Minnesotans will pay about $55.18 for a 10-person Thanksgiving dinner, with lower turkey prices—down more than 16%—helping push costs 5% lower than last year.  KROC-AM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On November 26th, a fast-moving storm dropped heavy snow in northern parts of Minnesota while Rochester saw light snowfall between 0.2 and 2 inches, and gusty winds created blowing snow that reduced visibility. The conditions led to multiple highway crashes and spinouts, and troopers responded to incidents + drivers were urged to use caution on slick roads.  KROC-AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Rochester is preparing for winter as its Public Works Department divides 458 miles of roads and 540 cul-de-sacs into three snow removal priorities—crews clear main roads within 8 hours after small snowfalls and use salt cautiously for environmental safety. Residents are urged to use off-street parking and follow parking rules from November 1 to April 1 to help keep roads safe.  KIMT
  • Residents will join a community forum and roundtable discussion hosted by the Office of the Mayor and City Council on December 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Heintz Center on the Rochester Community and Technical College campus—where the Democracy Innovations for Better Public Meetings project aims to make public meetings more accessible and transparent.  KIMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • An Olmsted County jury awarded nearly $20 million in damages to Linette and Daniel Nelson after alleged negligent care during surgeries in 2017 and 2018 led to serious complications at Mayo Clinic — the trial took place in Rochester.  KROC
  • Mayo Clinic researchers uncovered new details about lung adenocarcinoma that may boost responses to immunotherapy. The study found that tumors missing a copy of the PRKCI gene were less aggressive + this insight may guide future treatment trials.  KIMT
