COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Landing MN launched its breakfast program in October to provide hot, nutritious meals to Rochester's homeless population. The program served 1,116 breakfasts in its first month and relied on local grants, community groups and donors — demonstrating its impact and community support.  KIMT
  • Caribbean Kitchen & Grill, a food truck from Waseca, will be at Little Thistle Brewing on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to support hurricane relief in Jamaica by serving Jerk chicken, fried plantains, wings, and BBQ ribs as the first stop in a series of planned events inspired by Barb ‘Debbie’ Rodney’s firsthand experience during Hurricane Melissa.  KIMT
  • Disabled American veterans began a firearm deer hunt at Chester Woods on November 13 and will continue to hunt through Sunday—Olmsted County officials say the event helps control the deer population and honors veterans while the state season runs until November 22.  KTTC
  • A new mentorship pilot program for senior housing transitions will begin early 2026 to help local older adults navigate housing changes. The initiative, led by the Coalition for Rochester Area Housing (in collaboration with Family Service Rochester and Elder Network), follows a housing study that found nearly one-third of local demand is for senior housing.  KIMT
  • The Southeast Minnesota Youth Shelter opened its 12,000 square foot facility on Thursday morning with a ribbon cutting to replace the VonWald Youth Shelter after a decade of planning—kids moved in as early as October. The new shelter features 12 single bedrooms, expandable to 16, along with areas for gaming, art, music, dining, and outdoor activities.  KIMT
  • Channel One Regional Food Bank fed about 5,000 SNAP and WIC recipients during the government shutdown, and SNAP benefits returned to normal when the shutdown ended. The food bank now plans to boost its supplies for the holiday season—relying on donations from local partners to restock its inventory.  KIMT
  • Catholic Charities has renamed its Warming Shelter to the Overnight Shelter to show it is open year round—located at 206 4th Street Southeast, it offers 54 beds plus 30 at the Salvation Army Expansion site that is open from November to March. Donations and programs like Sponsor a Bed help support its services.  KIMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rochester Community and Technical College's Dental Assistant and Dental Hygiene programs won the Minnesota State Excellence in Curriculum Programming Award at the Academic and Student Affairs Fall Leadership Conference, recognizing innovative curriculum and outstanding student success. The programs achieved a 100% job placement rate and now feature a new $1.57 million dental simulation lab plus dedicated efforts to serve diverse local healthcare needs.  KIMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Erin Olson of Stewartville delivered her healthy baby girl, Sadie Olson, in the passenger seat of her minivan moments from the Olmstead Medical Pregnancy and Birth Center on Saturday, November 8th at 10:27 p.m. after strong contractions forced her to hurry, and she later completed the birth process at the hospital.  KTTC

  • The Tap House in downtown Rochester is dressed as a holiday wonderland—featuring a Grinch room and festive decor—and is open through January 7 to serve food and holiday drinks. Guests can enjoy the special drink menu and seasonal ambiance in the transformed space.  KROC-AM
