Good morning, Rochester. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 24th of October.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday night, the 12th annual Good Gifts Gala raised money to fix the trail system at Good Earth Village (in Spring Valley) after floods damaged it. The fundraiser supports the ministry’s 55-year work in leadership training and community service for families in southeast Minnesota. KTTC
- ➤ Today, the Rochester Ronald McDonald House unveiled a fresh look — one of the first among 255 chapters worldwide to simplify its branding — while still keeping its mission to care for families. CEO Nick Mueller said the new design does not change the mission, noting that last year the facility helped 150 families in Western Wisconsin and saved about $3 million in medical costs. KIMT
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A survey from Environment Minnesota Research and Policy Center found microplastic threads in Cascade Lake this summer. The study of 40 lakes found pollution that may harm fish and birds — and experts call for reducing single-use plastics and further research. KIMT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Several southeast Minnesota school districts will ask voters to support school funding referenda on the November 4 ballot. The measures — Austin seeking $66.7M for building upgrades and a pool, Byron proposing dual referenda for operating funds and technology, and Triton asking for $6.5M for various improvements — come as district leaders plan long-term educational enhancements — officials say — to address future needs. - ➤ Olmsted County accepted funding from the Minnesota Department of Commerce's Solar on Public Building Grant Program to install solar panels on eight public sites including the Public Works Service Center and local parks; the state grant covers 70% of the cost and the panels will be installed starting this fall and completed by summer, with federal reimbursement expected in 2027 (this project supports the county’s Climate Action Plan to reduce energy costs and lower greenhouse emissions). - ➤ The City of Rochester is inviting residents to review new design renderings and share ideas for revitalizing Sixth Avenue West—planned to improve downtown mobility after the closure of Third and Fourth Avenue Southwest. Public sessions will be held on November 4 at Spyhouse Coffee Roasters starting at 5:30 p.m., November 5 online at noon, and November 13 at Well Living Lab, with design recommendations set for City Council review in January and project work planned for 2027 or later.
