ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The investigation into Rochester golf pro Nathan Westergaard’s death concluded after an autopsy ruled his 38-year-old death accidental — he was hit by a vehicle on Salem Rd in early August near Bamber Lake.  KROC-AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 6 in Rochester is expanding its facility by converting a former parking building into eight large classrooms over more than 3,000 square feet—this project will finish by August 1, 2026 with classes starting in September 2026 as 37 apprentices join a five-year training program for multiple certifications.  KIMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by Environment Minnesota Research and Policy Center found tiny plastic fibers in 40 of 41 waterways — including Cascade Lake — and harder plastic fragments in some sites. The group is urging local governments to reduce single-use plastics to protect wildlife and water quality.  KTTC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The American Federation of Government Employees said after 22 days of a government shutdown, some members have missed a paycheck and may miss another if it continues. The union represents 18,000 federal workers from Minnesota and 17,000 from Iowa and is working with agencies, unions and banks—offering food shelf contacts, remote work options and payment plans to help members manage bills.  KIMT
  • Olmsted County approved a one-time donation of up to $200,000 for Channel One Food Bank to buy food and infant formula for families affected by the shutdown. Nearly 9,000 households rely on SNAP, MFIP or WIC benefits—officials noted the funds address only part of the need if federal benefits remain halted.  KTTC
  • A controlled burn and training exercise took place on October 22 at the corner of 19th Street and 60th Avenue northwest, and officials reported that 60th Avenue was closed from Valleyhigh Road to 19th Street from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.—residents were advised to use alternate routes.  KTTC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mayo Clinic in Rochester earned its 7th Magnet redesignation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center on Wednesday — a top honor that recognizes over 30 years of continuous nursing excellence and places the clinic in the top 1% of hospitals worldwide.  KTTC
  • Olmsted County officials have used National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week to urge parents to have their children screened for lead exposure since only about 30% of kids have received a blood lead test by age 3 — the Minnesota Department of Health advises testing at ages one and two to prevent harmful effects on growth and development.  KTTC
  • Mayor Kim Norton is inviting Rochester residents to join two community walks to promote wellness and represent their City Ward — the walks will be held at the Rochester Regional Sports Center on November 5 at 7 a.m. and November 15 at 9 a.m. as part of the Move with the Mayor initiative.  KIMT
