Good morning, Rochester. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 18th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Retired nurses packed 3,500 diapers this week at the Family Resource Center, which has provided over 36,000 diapers weekly since March to families facing high costs. The center—hosting a diaper drive through October—asks the community to donate diapers (especially sizes 6 and 7) and baby wipes at its north and south locations.  KTTC

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Minnesota Zoo will host its Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular with an expanded trail of over 5,000 carved pumpkins and personalized options for families. The event will run nightly until November 2—an adults-only evening with live music, a magic show, and drinks will be available for those seeking a quieter night.  KROC-AM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study found microplastics in all 40 Minnesota waterways tested from Lake Superior to the southwest, with every site containing fibers and some sites also having fragments and films. Researchers from Environment Minnesota Research and Policy Center urged lawmakers to adopt new policies (including banning plastic bags) to help clear the pollution (from single-use plastics) before it worsens.  KTTC
  • A lawsuit was filed over Pine Island’s review of a planned 480-acre data center—claiming that the study left out key details about the project’s size and its effects on local energy and water systems. The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy says the review does not meet state law requirements and that the project, if built, will be one of the largest in the region.  KTTC

  • Olmsted County Public Health Services confirmed a measles case — in an unvaccinated child under five who traveled internationally — and officials are now contacting those at risk — urging residents to update vaccination records — to help stop the spread.  KIMT
