COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources urged families to enjoy MEA break by exploring outdoor activities and fall colors—families can use the Fall Color Finder tool, join naturalist programs at 64 state parks, or take part in the Youth Deer Hunting Opener on public lands.  KTTC
  • Local farmer Tom Cotter said the harvest season is strong as warm, sunny weather has helped crop yields—although a rainy Tuesday briefly slowed work. He added that most growers expect more moisture soon to help with tillage and cover crop planting.  KTTC
  • Community members gathered Tuesday evening at St. James Coffee in Rochester to pray for healing after recent tragic events and to remember assassinated activist Charlie Kirk on his birthday. Attendees also prayed for the accused Tyler Robinson’s conversion and for all victims of violence while the coffee house provided praise and worship music and free rosaries and Bibles.  KTTC
  • Mayo Clinic held a neighborhood meeting on October 14—neighbors discussed the planned West Logistics Center meant to support the expanding hospital buildings and add a new green space while addressing concerns over traffic from up to 6 trucks during peak hours. Mayo Clinic will submit its construction application within 30 days and aims to finish the project by 2028 while continuing to work with the community.  KIMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Minnesota state colleges are waiving application fees and skipping college essays during Minnesota State Month in October — a move aimed at reducing barriers to college entry. Riverland Community and Technical College reported increased enrollment and similar rises have been seen at other state colleges.  KTTC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today construction begins on a new boat launch and parking lot at Lake Zumbro Park, and water levels will be lowered six feet over two weeks by RPU—this may force a temporary closure of the launch until levels are safe. A county meeting to gather feedback on fishing pier and picnic shelter plans is set for October 23 from 6—8 p.m. at the Pondy Restaurant and Bar in Mazeppa.  KTTC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USDA's Commodity Supplemental Food Program is still providing free groceries to 12,000 local seniors through Channel One Regional Food Bank during the government shutdown. Jessica Sund said that if the shutdown extends past October—supplies may dwindle and leave some seniors without food.  KIMT
  • The city said downtown construction will continue into winter as crews coordinate with contractors to keep streets safe for snowplows — some projects finished in the fall while others remain active when weather permits and sidewalks are cleared for pedestrians.  KTTC

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Mayo Civic Center turned pink Monday night for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and will display the lights until Sunday—concertgoers will see the display again Friday when Girl Named Tom performs.  KTTC

  • Rochester shoppers are searching for a favorite fall snack at Trader Joe’s as a JoyBird study finds that Savory Squash Pastry Bites top local popular items — the store also carries seasonal treats like pumpkin bagels and apple cider donuts.  KROC-AM
