  • Three Southeast Minnesota towns are taking part in a nationwide contest that lets the public vote for their favorite water tower until Oct. 17 — the contest follows Rochester’s Ear of Corn water tower winning the People’s Choice Award in 2021 and features towers from Goodhue, Lewiston, and Owatonna.  KROC-AM
  • Today at noon, Episode 27 of the Equity Alliance series airs live—featuring Cradle to Career discussing plans for a more equitable future for Rochester’s children and young adults. The series, launched in 2023 through a city and Destination Medical Center partnership, has provided local organizations with professional development tools—supporting equity-based initiatives.  KIMT
  • On Monday, a group of strangers—led by nurse Tricia Sommers—saved a 75-year-old man by performing CPR after they found him unconscious in his car along Bandel Rd NW. His wife confirmed he is now in St. Marys Hospital awaiting a heart stent after suffering a heart attack.  KTTC

  • Owner Terrence Kappauf expects October to be his busiest month at Sekapp Orchard after a bountiful apple harvest this fall, as families will visit to pick apples and choose pumpkins—he has put the 12-acre orchard with 8,000 apple trees on sale for around $8 million and plans to reinvest earnings.  KIMT

  • A recent survey found that 51% of adults are hunting for the perfect Halloween costume this season. Adults in Minnesota are choosing looks inspired by movies like Wicked and Fantastic Four and pop culture trends like KPop Demon Hunters and Taylor Swift—Travis Kelce styles, with local thrift stores offering some options.  KROC-AM

  • As the soybean harvest wraps up, Asian lady beetles invade homes and sometimes bite, leaving a stinging sensation — experts advise homeowners to seal cracks and use a vacuum to safely remove them. The beetles gather on warm, sunny walls as they look for a cozy spot to spend the cooler months.  KROC-AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since Tuesday, Oct. 7, drivers on southbound Highway 52 shifted to new paved west lanes that provide temporary access to the eastbound I-90 ramp—construction crews work on the south side ramps. The detour will be removed by Nov. 14.  KTTC
  • The City of Rochester is hosting its second annual Snow Summit on October 25 at the Public Works and Transit Operations Center from 9 a.m. to noon to help residents prepare for winter as experts offer live demonstrations and safety tips—attendees are provided a complimentary shuttle from Foster Arend Park.  KIMT
  • On Tuesday, the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office held its fall awards ceremony to honor deputies and staff, giving 57 awards and welcoming 18 new hires — Sheriff Kevin Torgerson said the event underscored the duty of earning the badge and connected families with the office's tradition. This ceremony continues a long-standing practice of recognizing service in our community.  KTTC
  • The City of Rochester approved a call for bids on October 6 for a $65 million sports complex that will offer eight baseball diamonds, 12 pickleball courts, and two all-purpose fields. The project will begin construction in spring 2026 to cut costs by avoiding winter competition—Rochester Community and Technical College may join to boost indoor recreation access.  KIMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment report for Olmsted County shows that mental health, access to care, and food security are top priorities. Officials say they will work with local partners to improve these issues through 2026 — a plan meant to create lasting change in community health.  KIMT
