Good morning, Rochester. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 11th of August.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Rochester man, Todd Michael Tlougan, faces three felony charges after police raided his southeast home on April 14 and found meth, fentanyl, cash and weapons—he admitted to selling drugs and had a 2016 conviction. KROC
- ➤ Steven Hart, a 69-year-old Rochester man, will face a second trial for charges related to a 2022 shooting after his previous 7½-year sentence was overturned by the appeals court (the ruling noted a defense expert's testimony was wrongly excluded) as his attorney plans to argue self-defense (the complaint stated the teen was shot in the groin, not the leg as initially reported). FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ Rochester Public Utilities has proposed a 6% annual increase in electric rates over the next five years, which will add nearly $6 a month to the average bill, and plans to raise water rates by up to 9% starting next year. The changes come as borrowing costs rise to fund the city’s 2030 net-zero energy goal—if approved, the final decision will be made in October—adding pressure on household budgets. KROC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the City of Rochester received a $499,114.80 grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency that was added to the city council consent agenda to build a new plaza on the Zumbro Riverfront Trail. If approved, the project will create a trailhead with benches, shaded seating and a bike fixit station and will cost $567,000 — with extra funds from the Destination Medical Center Economic Development Agency and an in-kind match. - ➤ MnDOT announced that the resurfacing of Hwy. 14 east in southern Rochester will now finish in mid-August after heavy rain in July delayed the original August 4 deadline. The work began on July 7 and is one of several projects along the beltline as crews support Mayo Clinic’s expansion. KROC-AM
