CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Minnesota Department of Corrections announced that former Rochester ax murderer David Brom—convicted at age 16 in 1988 for killing his parents and two siblings—was transferred today from Lino Lakes State Prison to a halfway house to begin his work release program that may lead to eventual parole. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued an air quality alert for Minnesota effective from 1 p.m. July 29 to 5 p.m. August 2 as heavy smoke from wildfires in Canada—Manitoba and Saskatchewan—has reduced air quality, prompting Rochester residents and other affected groups to limit outdoor activities. The agency advised those with respiratory issues, heart conditions, young children, and older adults to take extra precautions to stay safe. KIMT
- ➤ Severe thunderstorms produced wind gusts of over 70 mph in Rochester and southeast Minnesota, with a peak of 76 mph at the Rochester airport that caused tree damage and power outages. Rochester Public Utilities reported that 24 customers lost power & weather officials said high heat and humidity fueled the storms. KROC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Rochester Police Department said a new 911 call-back service will help decide if a call needs emergency help—about one in 10 calls is cut off before someone answers. The automated system lets callers press One for emergencies or Two for accidents, and if there is no response, a worker will call back. KTTC
- ➤ Rochester is advancing its first bus rapid transit system as utility work began at the East Terminus on 6th Street Southeast with traffic adjustments starting July 28 and a full closure scheduled for August 18 that will reopen early next year. Construction on 2nd Street Southwest will start August 11 with a street closure between 11th and 13th Avenues until December — a project led by the City and Destination Medical Center to keep pedestrian access clear. - ➤ Olmsted County is set to open its cannabis retail registration lottery starting August 11—business representatives have 10 days to submit complete applications with a $100 fee and required documents, with the window closing at 5 p.m. on August 22. If more than four retail registrations are received, a public lottery will select winners—three alternates will be available if primary applicants do not secure a state license or location. KIMT
