COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Disabled American Veterans Mayo Southeast Chapter 28 has removed most Savers clothing collection bins from Rochester and nearby areas due to a volunteer shortage + the bins will gradually return as new volunteers are recruited. Community members can continue to support the chapter by donating clothing directly at Savers Thrift Store at Crossroads Shopping Center on Broadway Ave S. KTTC
- ➤ The Salvation Army announced that both Walmart stores in Rochester will host collection boxes for school supplies from today until July 11 – the drive is organized with the United Way of Southeast Minnesota to help Rochester Public Schools students. Captain Michael Hanton said the drive will accept items such as graphing calculators, graphing paper, and scissors to better equip kids for school. KIMT
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Monday night, a motorcycle carrying Rochester residents hit a deer on Hwy. 14 east of Eyota and sent the rider and his passenger to St. Mary’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries — the bike left the road and went into a ditch. KROC
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Hafsa Mohamed, a 22-year-old Rochester woman, was charged with assault, property damage, DWI, and disorderly conduct after she allegedly hit a man and a woman in the parking lot of Riverview Suites on July 3 then rammed a police squad car when officers arrived— the man was taken to St. Mary’s with a broken femur and the woman reported no injuries. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rochester City Council approved a design for the $65 million outdoor phase of a sports complex on a 160-acre site east of the Shoppes on Maine. Construction will start in November and the facility will open in May 2027—funded by a sales tax extension approved in November 2023. KROC
- ➤ The Rochester Police Department is launching drones as first responders to boost public safety by using two permanently-docked units that a remote pilot can manually activate + the drones provide real-time scene views. The five-year program is funded by a Mayo Clinic Community engagement grant + it aims to enhance both officer and community safety. KTTC
- ➤ The Rochester City Council approved the police department’s purchase of two drones—costing $467,290.14 over five years—to serve as first responders and provide live visual support from strategic docking locations, with funding partly from a Mayo Clinic Community Engagement Grant and controlled via a browser-based application that does not permit surveillance. KROC-AM
- ➤ Southbound Highway 52 will be closed from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on July 15 for bridge beam installation, MN Department of Transportation said - drivers will follow a detour through Rochester to Highway 63 south and I-90 east at Stewartville. Additional detours for concrete deck pours and equipment removal will be announced as work continues - the project is part of a three-year plan to improve bridge clearance and traffic flow. KIMT
