Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 5th of July.
Good morning, Rochester.
On July 4, Stewartville Summerfest held its Art in the Park at Bear Cave Park where families gathered around 10:00 a.m. to shop and play, and the day also featured the 21st annual 4th of July Car Show with a grand parade at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks at 10:00 p.m.—a full day of local celebration.
On Friday, a one-vehicle rollover on Highway 80 near Fillmore County Road 7 in Fillmore Township injured two people—both were taken to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester for non-life-threatening treatment.
29-year-old Refugio Kooky Muniz III was arrested on May 22 after he threatened an employee at The Landing MN by raising a knife and pleaded guilty to terroristic threats and fifth-degree assault—he has been sentenced to up to three years in prison with credit for 43 days served.
Olmsted County GOP demanded that DFL Chair John Swanson apologize and remove a Facebook post — one that compared elected leaders to Nazis — arguing it shows a lack of respect for differing views.
KTTC reported that the post first appeared on June 11 and remains active as local political leaders debate the standards of civility after last month’s shootings.
A new Minnesota law requires any ticketed event with 100 or more attendees to provide free water and allow patrons to bring their own bottles when water is available outside the venue.
The rule does not apply if beverages are prohibited and aims to cut the high cost of buying bottled water at these events.
Late last week, the Minnesota State Patrol added a Bell 429 helicopter with dual engines that can keep flying if one fails—this feature will help rescue teams reach remote sites faster and safely lift patients using a side-mounted hoist.
The new aircraft is set to shorten response times to about 15 minutes.
