COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rochesterfest visitors learned about Sweet Stack Waffle Shack, a new food vendor operated by a local Rochester family, during a KTTC News at Noon segment on Monday. The vendor is one of 20 small businesses with unique stories featured at Soldiers Field.  KTTC
  • United Way of Southeast Minnesota announced it approved $1.1 million to fund 41 programs in Olmsted—Dodge—Winona counties, including Channel One, Rochester Public Schools and the Salvation Army. The nonprofit said rising cost-of-living challenges increased the need for housing, food assistance and other essentials.  KTTC
  • The United Way of Southeast Minnesota Board of Directors approved $1.1 million in funding for 41 programs in Olmsted, Dodge, and Winona Counties to meet needs in health, youth opportunities, financial security, and resiliency. The group noted research showing 35% of local households are living paycheck-to-paycheck and rising demand for housing and food assistance—details that highlight a century-long legacy of community support.  KIMT

CRIME NEWS

  • Rochester police arrested 22-year-old Katavion Leggins (charged with second-degree assault, reckless discharge of a firearm, and gross misdemeanor possession of a firearm) after he fired rounds during a June 17 shooting at the Gates of Rochester apartment complex amid a drug deal; no injuries were reported.  KROC-AM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New data from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development shows Minnesota added 6,600 jobs in May, with Rochester gaining 5,700 jobs + a 4.5% rise that led the state in employment growth. Ryan Parsons, president of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce, said strong demand in health care, education, trades and hospitality will drive even more opportunities in the region.  KTTC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In Rochester, the North Broadway reconstruction project has changed traffic patterns for this weekend as southbound lanes use new pavement while work continues on the northbound lanes. Drivers will face limited lanes between 13th Street Northwest and Riverview Heights Drive Northeast (with some sidewalk closures and a detour via 2nd Avenue Northeast) as the project finishes by July.  KROC
  • Olmsted County commissioners sent a letter to federal leaders urging a reconsideration of proposed Medicaid cuts that they say will harm local residents by limiting healthcare for 16,000 children and by creating staff shortages to meet new work requirements+ They warned that the cuts could force an increase in property taxes to maintain services for vulnerable groups.  KROC
  • Olmsted County commissioners sent a letter today urging federal leaders to reconsider proposed Medicaid cuts that would impose biannual work checks and strain local staff—these changes could force tax increases to fund essential services and affect vulnerable residents.  KROC-AM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mayo Clinic researchers are studying early signs of ovarian cancer by looking at cell changes in a 22-year-old patient with high genetic risks who had preventive surgery despite a benign cyst. The team is using a living fallopian tube biobank to develop new screening tools — which may offer better risk-reduction choices for other patients.  KIMT
