COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three Rivers Community Action, a nonprofit serving basic human needs, celebrated a $30,000 grant—given by First Alliance Credit Union and Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines—to boost its Achieve Homeownership Program for first-generation homebuyers in southern Minnesota. The funding will help ease homeownership barriers for local families.  KTTC
  • Family Service Rochester will open the new Family Resource Center on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 930 40th Street Northwest — the center is set to support youth engagement, education and mental health with guided tours, complimentary food and games.  KIMT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday night, a Kasson man and a Hayfield woman were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital after their motorcycle struck a deer on Hwy. 14 near Dodge Center— the bike was traveling east and hit the animal before crashing into the grass median— with non-life-threatening injuries and neither wore a helmet.  KROC-AM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rochester International Airport celebrated a win Thursday as its American Airlines team earned the company’s ‘Customer Cup’ by reaching a 97.78% on-time departure rate and a 99.88% success rate with over 11,000 handled bags—beating 58 similar airports and proving its strong performance in safety and customer service during challenging winter conditions—and the team operates four daily flights to O’Hare.  KTTC

CRIME NEWS

  • Charges have been filed against 35-year-old Luke Larson of Alma after he crashed his truck on Sep. 27th last fall — killing 59-year-old Mark Holzer of Rochester and 59-year-old Brian Shank of Chatfield while injuring a 69-year-old motorcyclist from Rushford — and the charges — two counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle and one count of second-degree recklessly endangering safety — will be prosecuted in Buffalo County.  KTTC

CULTURE NEWS

  • The History Center of Olmsted County announced free entry until the end of August—thanks to Altra Federal Credit Union and Think Bank—and visitors will have access to the campus, museum gallery and research center while events at Mayowood remain excluded.  KTTC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Christof Wetter (from Muenster, Germany) presented his research on organic household waste on Thursday at the Olmsted County Government Center to Rochester and county leaders, showing how Germany uses 1,200 treatment plants to convert 14 million tons of waste into biofuel and nearly eliminate landfills. Leaders then discussed future plans (including possible pilot programs and stricter standards) to boost local recycling and biofuel production.  KTTC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith announced a $5 million grant to survey and repair roads damaged by last summer’s severe storms using funds from the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program. The grant will address issues such as the Rapidan Dam failure that made County Road 9 unsafe for local travelers — a result of flooding in 42 counties.  KTTC

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new City Blood Donor Battle organized by Mayo Clinic and the City of Rochester is ongoing and aims to boost blood donations from June 2 to September 5. Donors choosing a city department at any donation site who give blood between June 2 and June 27 will be entered in a drawing for a Blackstone Grill with three winners to be picked.  KTTC
