Good morning, Rochester. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 25th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rochester Recreation Center at 21 Elton Hills Dr. Northwest will begin a $200,000 renovation this weekend that upgrades the north ice rink with new boards, glass, netting, player benches, penalty boxes and a sound system (funded by the Mayo Clinic Community Grant, Rochester Youth Hockey Association and other groups). The south rink will remain open though public skating may be limited (work is expected to finish by the end of July).  KROC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday night at 11:00 p.m., firefighters put out a heavy garage fire at a home on the 5600 block of Bragg Ln. Southeast using tanker trucks due to no nearby hydrants — and they remind residents to plug only one tool charger into an outlet and to unplug when not in use, with all occupants safely out of the home.  KROC
  • Early Saturday morning, a house fire at the 13000 block of 111th Avenue in LeRoy killed a 90-year-old man and injured an adult woman who was taken to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester — multiple fire and sheriff agencies responded to the blaze.  KIMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Renovations began this weekend at the north ice rink of the Rochester Rec Center at 21 Elton Hills Dr. Northwest using $200,000 from a Mayo Clinic Community Grant, a matching contribution from the Rochester Youth Hockey Association and support from local clubs—new boards, glass, netting, player benches, penalty boxes and a sound system are part of the upgrade ahead of the World Juniors Hockey Tournament.
