CRIME NEWS

  • Rochester man Jon Michael Ask, 46, was sentenced to five years in federal prison after a 2023 home search seized 30,000 fentanyl pills amid a drug trafficking investigation—he admitted to conspiring to distribute fentanyl and cocaine and will serve four years of supervised release.  KROC-AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Riverside Music Series will begin at Mayo Park on July 13 with free concerts held on Sundays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The lineup includes Blind Melon, Caylee Hammack and Hoobastank — an event funded by the city and local partners.  KIMT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An event in downtown Rochester will mark the 10-year anniversary of the Destination Medical Center initiative today at the Hilton Hotel—former Governor Mark Dayton, former Mayo Clinic CEO Dr. John Noseworthy, and Mayor Kim Norton will speak about the program’s role in driving over $1.8 billion in private investment and laying the groundwork for a $5 billion clinic expansion downtown.  KROC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln K-8 School in Rochester celebrated 50 years of educating students with a gathering on Thursday evening at 5 p.m.—staff collected photos, articles and stories for a special display while alumni were invited to join the milestone celebration.  KTTC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Century High School senior named Annika Bartucz has educated local residents on native prairies with her nonprofit Midwestern Rewilding by distributing thousands of seed packets in brown envelopes—an effort that supports conservation and reduces air pollution. She presented at Longfellow Elementary to inspire students to create native prairies—an initiative she will continue through the summer before starting college.  KTTC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, Destination Medical Center approved millions to support four major development projects in Rochester including a shared lab facility at Two Discovery Square, a mixed-use housing project, a 141-unit affordable housing development and a 75-unit senior housing project, while also funding improvements for four historic downtown buildings—efforts that depend on state bonding and future assistance.  KROC
