COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rochester Public Library is asking residents to share input on future services for Rochester and Olmsted County. The survey—available in English, Spanish, and Somali and open until June 8—will guide planning and be presented to the City Council in August.  KTTC

CRIME NEWS

  • Rochester police arrested 31-year-old Nathan Peter Tavares after he allegedly broke into a hotel room at the Country Inn and Suites on the 4300 block of Hwy. 52 and assaulted a woman shortly after 11:30 Thursday morning — he now faces charges of first-degree burglary and misdemeanor assault with conditional bail set at $25,000.  KROC-AM
  • Rochester police arrested Nathan Tavares after he allegedly broke into a hotel room and attacked a woman on Thursday morning—he was charged with first-degree burglary and misdemeanor assault and released on $25,000 bail.  KROC
  • Deputies arrested a Rochester man on Saturday just after 1 p.m.—he led a high-speed motorcycle chase through northeast Rochester and Olmsted County, recorded speeding at 90 mph in a 55-mph zone and ignoring stop signs until he was apprehended near Eyota Mini Storages.  KTTC
  • An 18-year-old teen from Byron pleaded not guilty to criminal vehicular operation after a hit-and-run on April 20 that broke a scooter rider’s leg + she is set to stand trial on November 24.  KIMT
  • Rochester motorcyclist Mark Heath was captured at a storage facility in Eyota after leading deputies on a high-speed chase on Saturday afternoon while speeding at 90 mph in a 55 mph zone, running stop signs and weaving through traffic — he now faces charges for felony fleeing, reckless driving, driving after revocation and speeding.  KROC-AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rochester's nearly completed Southeast Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial hosted its first program Monday at 6 p.m. to honor more than 40 fallen officers from police, sheriff’s deputies, state troopers, federal agents, and military police — a milestone in a project that has been in the works for over 15 years. Construction began in 2021 and finishing touches continue while $150,000 remains needed, with a formal dedication planned later this year — marking ongoing efforts to complete the site.  KROC
  • The City of Rochester will open Cascade Lake Beach, Foster Arend Beach and Lincolnshire Splash Pad on Saturday, May 24 — these sites are free and open daily until Labor Day, while the Soldiers Field Aquatic Center will open on Thursday, June 5 with lifeguards and admission fees and construction continues on the Silver Lake Pool for a summer 2026 finish.  KTTC
  • On May 19, the City Council approved the initial design for a $19 million project at the Broadway Avenue intersection on Highway 14, where the city will pay $5.7 million and plans include narrowing lanes, reducing speed limits, and adding raised crosswalks—meant to address 152 right-turn lane accidents from 2014 to 2023. The project will break ground in 2027 amid mixed community views on its effects on commuter flow and pedestrian safety.  KIMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mayo Clinic researchers discovered a protein in heart cells clumps during cold storage—using the drug Canrenone nearly tripled donor hearts' pumping strength in tests, which may lead to better transplant outcomes and more hearts available for patients.  KTTC
