CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Rochester police reported that on Sunday, four adults and a juvenile broke into an occupied condo, smashed a sliding glass door with a rock, and assaulted a man who returned early from work on Mother's Day, stealing $3000 in cash and $1800 in shoes — three adults were charged with first-degree burglary and misdemeanor assault with conditional bail set at $35,000 for two and $17,500 for one. - ➤ Rochester police stopped a vehicle on Friday morning at 8:45 a.m. for allegedly running a red light and arrested 31-year-old Chloe Elizabeth Billings after an officer found a powdery substance testing positive for fentanyl in her purse—with additional fentanyl and methamphetamine discovered at Olmsted County Jail—she now faces felony second-degree drug possession, felony third-degree drug possession, and gross misdemeanor introducing contraband into a jail. - ➤ DNA tests linked 34-year-old Travis Martel Rios, a Rochester felon with a 2016 domestic assault conviction, to a loaded Glock pistol found when a state trooper stopped his vehicle on October 7th for expired registration + he now faces a gun crime charge for possession by a convicted violent offender. - ➤ A Hokah man, Nicholas McCabe, 24, was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his father with a single scissor blade at McCabe Roofing on Monday morning—his father was taken to the hospital with multiple stab wounds as police noted he had not been taking his medication for his mental illness. - ➤ Authorities are investigating the death of a University of Minnesota student who was reported missing on Monday afternoon in the Delaware Street Southeast and East River Road area and whose body was found near the Mississippi River—officials expect more details from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office soon. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ RPS expects enrollment to keep falling from over 17,500 students and plans to cut staffing and other expenses after a study showed numbers could drop to around 14,382 by the 2034-2035 school year. The study—sent to parents Tuesday—pointed to lower birth rates and a rise in homeschooling, and superintendent Kent Pekel discussed these projections with the school board Tuesday night. KTTC

- ➤ 2nd St. Southwest closed between 4th Ave. and 6th Ave. on May 13 for Mayo Clinic’s $5 billion downtown expansion and the start of an underground tunnel that will connect a new patient care building to a future transit station. Traffic was reduced to one lane each way with detour signs in place, and the road is set to reopen in early 2026—drivers need to follow the posted signs. KROC
