CRIME NEWS

  • Rochester teen Izayah Frazier got five years in prison for illegally having a handgun during a May 4 shooting outside an apartment building — a 29-year-old man, Christopher Lamar Smith, will stand trial in December on charges related to the incident.  KROC
  • A Rochester woman, Cherish Ann Portillo, was arrested last Thursday at 9 a.m. on Civic Center Drive after she allegedly fled a traffic stop and was later found with more than 48 grams of methamphetamine — she pleaded guilty to porch theft in March and faces sentencing tomorrow.  KROC
  • A Rochester woman, Cherish Ann Portillo, was arrested after police followed a fleeing vehicle on Civic Center Drive and found over 48 grams of meth in her belongings (her bail was set at $25,000), and she will be sentenced on Wednesday for a porch theft case to which she pleaded guilty in March.  KROC-AM
  • An Olmsted County judge issued an arrest warrant for 32-year-old Robert Daniel Laurence Derrick Robinson for missing his settlement hearing in an ongoing knife attack case from September 15 on Northern Hills Drive Northeast—this is his second warrant since January for not showing up in court.  KROC
  • Rochester man Robert Daniel Laurence Derrick Robinson had an arrest warrant issued after he missed his required court hearing for a stabbing case on September 15 at a residence on Northern Hills Drive Northeast—he had also missed a hearing in January and his trial is set for next January.  KROC-AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Minnesota Historical Society announced dozens of grants to preserve Minnesota history — including $6,685 for Rochester to restore the 1924 Plummer House Carriage House and $6,320 for the Rochester Art Center’s preservation work. The 28 small grants will support nonprofits, educational groups, government agencies and tribes through a quarterly program funded by the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.  KTTC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rochester Risers Rotary Club held its 12th annual My Book Day event on Monday at SPARK—where first graders from Elton Hills, Franklin, Gage, Overland, Pinewood and Sunset Terrace played and received a book about regulating emotions to help them get ready for summer. Mayor Kim Norton spoke about the importance of reading and play, and the event also offered children a pass to return to SPARK.  KTTC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Minnesota DNR advised families planning to camp in state parks to check park offices for current burn bans and fire safety details—Jake Gaster at Frontenac State Park noted that campers must purchase certified firewood and use tick repellents as warm weather increases fire and tick risks. Campers are reminded that gathering personal firewood is illegal and early tick removal can help prevent disease.  KTTC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State leaders met in Rochester on Monday at Family First Rochester from 10 to 11 a.m. to inform residents about proposed federal cuts to SNAP that would shift 25% of benefit costs onto the state and could cost about $220 million a year. Officials voiced concern that the changes would threaten the state budget, public health, and the food system.  KTTC
