- ➤ On May 7, the NAACP held a town hall at the Rochester Civic Theatre to address a racially charged incident at Roy Sutherland Playground when a viral video showed Shiloh Hendrix using a racial slur against an autistic child who allegedly took her diaper bag—community leaders including Mayor Kim Norton and NAACP president Walé Elegbede condemned the incident, announced upcoming GoFundMe campaigns to support the affected family and the man who filmed the video, and urged respect for the family's privacy amid safety concerns. - ➤ Firefighters responded to Gage Elementary School around 2 a.m. Wednesday when a small shed caught fire and quickly extinguished the blaze while fire marshals continued investigating the cause as schools remained closed for curriculum planning. KTTC

- ➤ Rochester police issued an arrest warrant on Tuesday for a Texas man charged with identity theft after more than $14,000 was taken from a Mayo Credit Union card and later sent to a Caesars Rewards Visa Card, and the suspect—65 year old John Thuan Tran from Richardson—is not answering calls. - ➤ Rochester police issued an arrest warrant on Tuesday for 65-year-old John Thuan Tran from Texas, who is accused of identity theft after transferring $14,500 from a Mayo Credit Union account to a bank in Texas—Tran did not return police calls and the victim had been targeted before. KROC-AM

- ➤ Rochester Civic Theatre has named Jacklyn Johnson as its new managing director. She was Artistic Director at Festival Theatre and directed production at Commonweal Theatre & plans to expand local educational programs & work with community partners. KIMT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Rochester Public Schools announced an 86% graduation rate for the class of 2024, up two percent from last year and the highest since the pandemic. The district raised rates for students with disabilities—and will launch a new program to support students facing attendance, grade, or behavior challenges. KIMT

- ➤ The City of Rochester announced that North Broadway Ave from 13th St Northwest to 16th St Northeast will reopen Friday, May 9 — unplanned utility work has extended a four-week detour that began in late March. Drivers should note that the 14th St Northeast intersection on North Broadway will reopen early next week — delays may continue with the road operating with one lane in each direction. KROC-AM
