COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Kids can register for Lemonade Day—a free program teaching business skills—set for June 6. Registration is open now with swag pick-ups and events planned from May 6 at Air Insanity to May 20 plus a Best Tasting Contest on May 31 at the Rochester Athletic Club. KROC-AM
- ➤ Betty Jo Dunphy spent over 100 hours cleaning up broken glass and splintered wood after a tornado damaged her property on Marion Road Southeast. Her garage collapsed on her car during the storm and local officials plan a damage assessment on May 14 to review recovery help. KIMT
- ➤ Mail carriers will pick up donated groceries along with regular mail Saturday to support The Salvation Army's downtown food shelf. Local residents can leave unopened, nonperishable items by their mailboxes and help volunteers sort donations (the food shelf is at 115 First Avenue Northeast and opens Tuesdays and Fridays for groceries). - ➤ Amazon’s new delivery station in Stewartville opened Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony — the 86,000 sqft facility in Olmsted County is processing 2,000 packages per day and is actively hiring to extend its two-day delivery promise in rural areas. KTTC
- ➤ Mayo Clinic received the 2026 W.O. Lawton Award from the National Association of Workforce Boards for its leadership in workforce development and community partnerships after being nominated by Workforce Development, Inc. and the Southeast Minnesota Workforce Development Board, with a panel of over 570 boards selecting the clinic. KIMT
- ➤ Uni Uni Bubble Tea, located across from St. Mary's, is struggling due to 2nd St. construction — ongoing since summer 2025 and expected to finish in August 2027 — and has turned to extra pop-up events to reach customers. KROC-AM
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Rochester Public Music will host its free FORWARD Concert Series this summer with six shows at neighborhood parks on Wednesday evenings in June and August. Concerts will feature live music, food vendors, a library bookmobile, and an Art Stop (a creative hands-on experience) from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. KIMT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ RPS school board will vote Tuesday on a resolution to switch from the alley system to an at-large election system—if approved, the change will be transmitted to the Secretary of State and take effect immediately. The proposal follows earlier state legislative action and gubernatorial approval. KTTC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rochester City Council approved $1.4 million in tax increment financing for The Common at Bear Creek, a six-story project offering 149 affordable apartments with community amenities near downtown. Construction will begin before August as the developer is reimbursed from future tax revenues — creating a new resource for residents. KROC-AM
- ➤ West Center Street from Broadway to 1st Avenue NW will close from May 11 for three weeks for parking ramp deck work; detours will guide pedestrians and vehicles while crews work safely and efficiently. KIMT
- ➤ Chateau Skyway is closed from May 5 to May 7 for ceiling repairs and upgrades aimed at long-term durability (city staff directs pedestrians to detours at University Square and the Wells Fargo building). KTTC
