COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Rochester NAACP is hosting its 21st Annual Juneteenth Community Celebration on Saturday, Jun. 13 at Soldiers Memorial Field Park from noon to 5 p.m.; the free event will have live performances, games, educational programming and community booths and will also present its first general education and endowed scholarships. - ➤ Childhood Cancer Community will host its inaugural fundraiser on Saturday, May 9 at American Legion Post 1215 to raise funds for support services and research for families facing childhood cancer treatment. The event will feature live music from Divas, Inc. & a raffle with close to 50 prizes. KTTC
- ➤ Mayo High School students raised $20,000 through their annual Give One For All campaign, helping the Women's Shelter and Support Center celebrate its 50th year and open a new 75-bed facility while reaching over $200,000 from students. The funds support emergency shelter, advocacy, legal aid and outreach. KIMT
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Gray Media reached an agreement to restore KTTC and other local stations to DISH so viewers in Rochester can once again watch local news, weather and sports. The change takes effect immediately. KTTC
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gas prices jumped this week, with the national average reaching $4.42 and Minnesota at $4.05, leaving drivers anxious about their next fill-up — diesel prices reached nearly $6 in some areas. KROC-AM
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Over the weekend, a surge of migratory birds such as Baltimore Orioles, Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds and Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks brightened backyards throughout Minnesota and neighboring states. Experts say residents can attract more birds by adding feeders and water features. KROC-AM
- ➤ Rochester Parks & Recreation announced Slow Mow Summer to encourage residents to mow less and support pollinators while conserving water and reducing fertilizer use. The campaign begins in May and offers a free yard sign at City Hall, with turf kept under 12 inches. KIMT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The MPCA added the former Dison’s Dry Cleaner property (located along North Broadway) to its Superfund priority list today after confirming tetrachloroethylene contamination in the soil that could affect groundwater; nearby residents and businesses have been informed of the ongoing tests. KROC-AM
- ➤ Minnesota is holding millions in unclaimed property (including utility deposits, final paychecks and dormant accounts), and residents can search the state’s free online database in just 10 seconds for any funds owed to them. Act promptly if you suspect some money might be yours. KROC-AM
- ➤ Xcel Energy is planning the $1.2 billion Gopher to Badger Link project that will install 140 miles of high voltage power lines and is hosting open houses for community input. Local farmers worry that transmission towers might disrupt fields, but Xcel says the lines are safe for crops — and livestock. KIMT
