- ➤ Josie Harjarten, a Rochester native diagnosed with autism at 22, has overcome stigma and achieved personal goals after graduating from the MICC program. She enrolled in the three-year immersive program in 2010, which teaches living skills and helps autistic adults gain independence. KTTC
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A former Twin Cities man was sentenced today after a February 2023 traffic stop in Rochester led police to recover five catalytic converters and theft tools; he received three years on probation + a stayed 13 month prison sentence, and another man arrested in the same case received five years on probation + pleaded guilty to theft. KROC
- ➤ A viral video recorded on April 28 at Roy Southerland Playground shows Shiloh Hendrix shouting racial slurs at a five-year-old boy with autism—an incident that sparked community outrage, led local leaders and the NAACP to demand accountability, and will prompt a demonstration on May 5 at 12 p.m. in front of the Olmsted County Government Center as Rochester Police investigate. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ This fall, the ACT in Minnesota will have 44 fewer questions and will cut test time from 195 minutes to 125 minutes while reducing math options and making the science section optional — adjustments designed to give students more time per question. Rochester Sylvan Learning Center director Jennifer Gohdes advised parents to review college requirements as the enhanced online version rolls out through July so any glitches can be fixed. KTTC

- ➤ The city of Rochester will open bidding on a project to repurpose 1700 square feet of an unused dispatch room at Fire Station 2 into a facility for emergency services & county personnel. Bidding begins May 28 at 1 p.m. and the work is expected to be completed by the end of summer. KIMT

- ➤ Mayo Clinic announced that the Damon Parking Ramp at 15 3rd Ave. Southwest will close in July to make room for the new Bernard E. and Edith B. Waterman Building—staff are urged to plan ahead by using alternative parking and transit options until the new facilities open. KROC
