CRIME NEWS

  • A Rochester woman, aged 20, was charged with two counts of criminal vehicular operation after a February 16 crash on East Circle Drive near the railroad tracks injured several people and led police to detect alcohol — her blood test registered 0.082 as she faces her first court appearance later this year.  KROC-AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Minnesota Department of Agriculture awarded over $1 million in grants to schools and early childhood education providers to boost local food in meals (including a $2,500 grant to Eureka Kids in Rochester). The funds, given to 63 school districts and nine centers, will improve meal quality and support local farmers.  KIMT
  • Thousands of Minnesota students will take part in Bike to School Day on May 7 as families can bike, walk, or join a walking school bus (a group that walks together) to get to school. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has registered more than 160 schools and is urging more schools to participate.  KTTC
  • More than 400 high school students competed in the third annual welding contest hosted by the 6 Plumbers and Pipefitters Training Center yesterday in Rochester, where groups had 24 minutes to show their skills and Byron High School took first place. The contest also featured a career fair that introduced students to apprenticeship opportunities and career paths in manufacturing, skilled trades, and the military.  KTTC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rochester Parks and Recreation is promoting Slow Mow Summer, a program that helps pollinators by recommending lawns be mowed two to four times a year and kept under 12 inches tall (new research from the University of Minnesota shows pollinators have fewer food options if lawns are too short) while residents can pick up one yard sign per household at City Hall (natural landscape permits are no longer required for pollinator gardens).  KTTC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Minnesota Department of Public Safety said nearly 300 agencies will patrol Minnesota roads to enforce speeding laws from today until Sept. 2—local drivers are warned that speeding is dangerous after at least 15 deaths have been linked to it in 2025.  KTTC
  • The city of Rochester began budget planning for 2026-2027 after a city council study session that looked at economic and property growth and funding adjustments (including state and federal funding). Key steps will include a council review on June 23, administrator presentations on August 25, September 3 and 15, setting a maximum levy on September 22 and a budget hearing on December 1 (to guide strategic spending).  KTTC
