ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rochester authorities said a 69-year-old woman named Patricia Lynn Spitzack-Havlish died in a NW house fire on March 31 and the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death accidental + the fire department is still investigating the cause.  KTTC

CRIME NEWS

  • A Rochester mother was sentenced to four years on probation and ordered to pay $800 restitution after she hit and dragged a woman about 50 feet in a Taco Bell parking lot last May—she was driving with her 11-year-old daughter on a revoked license.  KROC
  • Rochester man Salmaan Mustaf Ali was accused of fleeing police twice, nearly hitting squad cars and ramming a garage door on Friday before being arrested Saturday morning.  KROC
  • A 20-year-old Rochester man is accused of fleeing police twice — nearly hitting squad cars and ramming a garage door — and was arrested Saturday morning; he faces charges — two counts of felony fleeing, a gross misdemeanor for third-degree property damage and a misdemeanor for driving after revocation — with bail set at $20,000 and a return in court next month.  KROC-AM
  • A Stewartville man named Daniel Ray Young Jr.—accused of a drive-by shooting during a Rochester Halloween party in October where a woman suffered a non-life-threatening eye injury—will formalize his guilty plea to an amended reckless discharge of a firearm charge in a hearing scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.  KROC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 2,000 student musicians will gather at Mayo High School for the 91st Big 9 Music Festival on May 2. The festival will feature 35 ensembles—performing at Mayo High School and Bethel Lutheran Church—and will end with a Finale Concert at 7:30 p.m. with tickets costing $10 for adults and $6 for students and seniors.  KIMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced $10 million in state and federal funding for new EV charging stations along interstates 90 and 94 — the stations will be installed at Kwik Trips in Stewartville, Albert Lea, Austin, and Worthington, as well as at Francis Energy Charging in Jackson and Blue Earth and at Love's Travel Stops in St. Charles. Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger said the funding will build a fast-charging network — a key step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  KTTC
  • Construction begins May 5 on roads from Highway 52 to Crossroads Dr. SW and from 3rd Ave SE to Marion Rd SE/15th Ave—motorists will face delays when lanes close. Crews will resurface the road, repair sidewalks, and improve crosswalks—work that is set to finish Aug. 4.  KTTC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mayo Clinic Caring Canines is a volunteer-based program in Rochester that pairs trained dog teams with human handlers to visit patients in and out of hospital (Gunner, a seven-year-old English Springer Spaniel, and his handler Kristine Kirsch help comfort those at Mayo Clinic Hospice). The program seeks additional volunteer K-9 teams, requiring therapy dog certification for the dogs and a monthly commitment from handlers.  KIMT
