COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This weekend, eight local thrift stores in Rochester and Lake City will hide gift cards during the Lucky Treasure Shop Hop as shoppers visit at least six shops and post a selfie to enter a $50 giveaway. Participants should check store hours and the event page for updates if the storm changes the schedule.  KROC-AM
  • Drivers in residential areas in Rochester may safely pass slow-moving street sweepers (when extra care is taken) while remaining alert for parked cars. The city also hosts a contest to name the sweepers, with entries accepted until March 25.  KROC-AM
  • Century High School FCCLA hosts a Green Out celebration and pet adoption event on Tuesday, Mar. 17 at the North Café from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event features adoptable pets, a costume contest, snacks, games and a donation drive for Paws and Claws.  KTTC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An approved report shows nearly $350 million in new investment flowed into Rochester’s Destination Medical Center District last year — with Mayo Clinic contributing $342 million — and the figures will be submitted to the state for funding.  KROC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mayo High School in Rochester cancelled classes Friday after high winds caused power outages that shut down building operations; an event with Secretary of State Simon was also cancelled.  KIMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rochester residents should prepare as heavy snow between 12 and 18 inches and high winds this weekend may cause dangerous travel and power outages. Local electricians advise checking circuit breakers and calling licensed professionals if home electrical service is damaged since utility companies only repair their own lines.  KIMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Unleash the SHE returns to Little Thistle on Saturday, April 25 with a 5K and 10K to support the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance. Participants can choose from women-only and open races, with packet pickup on April 23 and live entertainment after the race — a day of fun and purpose for all.  KROC-AM
