COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 10 local agencies will meet on Thursday, Mar. 12 at Autumn Ridge Church for a community conversation about moving from homelessness to stable housing. The event will feature resource tables, snacks, brief presentations, and a question-and-answer session.  KROC-AM
  • Recent studies rank Minnesota among the best states for women by placing it 4th overall with strong median earnings, graduation rates, and women-owned businesses, and show it as 3rd for being baby-friendly and 6th for supporting working moms + local progress. The findings highlight the state's ongoing promise for women.  KROC-AM
  • Thursdays Downtown returns for nine weeks starting June 11 with live music, food vendors, and art booths at 1st Ave SW to Peace Plaza (a new Youth Booth debuts for young entrepreneurs); vendor applications close April 10.  KROC-AM
  • Rochester is inviting residents to name street sweepers for the 20th anniversary of the A Litter Bit Better spring cleanup event — winning submissions will be announced during the mayoral proclamation and appear on the city’s six sweepers.  KTTC

CULTURE NEWS

  • A TV survey finds that Minnesota residents view Friday the 13th as their top superstition. With Feb. 13 already behind us, residents will face Friday, March 13 — and later, Friday, Nov. 13.  KROC-AM
  • Rochester Thaw Music Festival will have its final run on March 21 at several Med City venues. Organizers said the team (balancing event planning with full-time jobs and life challenges) decided it was time to end the festival after years of success.  KROC-AM

  • Riverland Community College has launched the Alumni Impact Award to honor graduates for leadership, career advancement, and community service; eligible nominees include alumni from Riverland and its predecessor institutions in Austin, Albert Lea, and Owatonna and nominations are now being accepted.  KIMT
  • University of Minnesota Assistant Professor Emily Fairfax advised Pixar on making beavers in the animated movie Hoppers scientifically correct as it opens today. Fairfax led the art team in field sessions to learn how actual beavers live plus she attended the red carpet premiere.  KROC-AM
