COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Word on Fire — a nonprofit founded by Bishop Robert Barron — announced it purchased the former First Unitarian Universalist Church on Walden Lane SW, marking its first property purchase in Rochester and reflecting its long-term commitment to local growth.  KTTC
  • The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced the winning names of its annual 'Name A Snowplow' contest after nearly 18,800 residents cast votes this winter. Rochester residents are represented by District 6’s new plow name, Flurrious George.  KROC-AM
  • The Salvation Army hosted Breakfast with a Badge yesterday at its downtown Social Services Center as members of the police and sheriff's offices served a waffle breakfast (from 8 to 9 a.m.) to facility visitors.  KTTC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A recent study found Wendy's is the priciest fast-food chain in the U.S. and its two local Rochester locations reflect this trend. The chain will close 3 to 6% of its national stores later in 2026 — exact locations have not been released.  KROC-AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local dairy makers will compete in the World Championship Cheese Contest from March 3 to 5 at Monona Terrace in Madison. Public judging is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 3 and 4, with the winning cheese announced livestream on March 5 at 2 p.m. (CT).  KIMT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study published Wednesday by Minnesota Bio-Fuels Associations shows Minnesota drivers saved $24.7 million in 2024 by choosing E15 (15% ethanol fuel) that was 18 cents cheaper than E10 at more than 550 stations statewide. It tracks $79.5 million in savings since 2013 and forecasts $272 million more by 2030.  KTTC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents at the 4giving Center held a listening session about launching a clubhouse for mental health support in Olmsted County. Officials plan another open house on Mar. 25 (at the Rochester Public Library) before final decisions are made by the county board.  KTTC
  • Mayo Clinic was named the world’s top hospital by Newsweek for the eighth year, based on patient surveys and quality care metrics. The Rochester institution said its staff is focused on using technology and AI to improve patient outcomes.  KROC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A 61-unit assisted living facility will replace Bob’s Trailer Park at 1915 Marion Road SE, which closed in May 2023 for safety reasons. The planning commission will review the project in 30 days, with groundbreaking planned later this fall — construction should take 12 to 15 months.  KIMT
