COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rochester-area nonprofits launched the Hope at Home Fund today to help families facing immediate risks of eviction and food insecurity amid the immigration crackdown. The initiative provides short-term rental aid + legal support to stabilize housing and food access.  KROC

  • Just Cozy, a small shop at the Apache Mall, is set to close today as employees confirm the shutdown and offer discounts on remaining items. The vacant storefront awaits a new tenant amid rising costs and shifting shopping habits.  KROC-AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rochester Public Schools emailed parents Thursday morning about possible budget cuts to address an $8.3 million deficit next year. The district will study changes (including relocating Girls Gymnastics) and gather community input over the next two months before proposing updates for 2027–2028.  KTTC
  • Luther College launches the Luther Promise program this fall to support full-time first-year students with a four-year graduation guarantee and at least $120,000 in scholarships, including extra tuition coverage for a ninth semester if needed (students must also meet academic standards and participate in advising).  KTTC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • RPU warns customers about scam calls that appear to come from its number and falsely claim overdue bills while threatening disconnection. Customers should verify their account status by calling RPU at 507+280+1500 or visiting the service center at 4000 East River Road NE.  KIMT
  • Rochester Public Utilities warned its customers today about scam calls coming from an RPU number—callers falsely claim accounts are overdue and urge immediate payment via an 866 number.  KTTC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mayo Clinic researchers in Rochester found ovarian cancer cells quickly trigger a survival response during treatment with PARP inhibitors, which may lower the drugs' effectiveness. They discovered that adding brigatinib could block this reaction and potentially improve outcomes.  KIMT
  • The Southeast Regional Crisis Center in Rochester will change its walk-in hours to 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily at 2121 Campus Drive SE, shifting from its previous 24/7 service. The update comes as a move to run the center better during tough economic times while emergency care remains available via 988 or 911.  KIMT
