  • Pine Island Winter Fest is set for January 31 and offers a full day of winter fun, starting with a new Medallion Hunt on January 26—packed with family activities at venues like the golf course and Trailhead Park.  KROC-AM
  • Project MN Youth Outdoors will host the 14th Annual Youth Ice Fishing Expo on Feb. 7 at Chester Woods Park with free registration at 10 a.m.; tournaments run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids ages 3-15 can fish without gear and enjoy snacks + prizes + lifetime licenses.  KROC-AM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Shoe, a new beverage bar in a 120-year-old house on North Broadway, is set to open Saturday, Jan. 31, serving drinks from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  KROC-AM
  • The former Denny's at 1226 Broadway Ave S, vacant since late 2023, is getting a makeover into Berries and Bubbles Café (a modern, cozy brunch spot). The owners urge locals to follow social media for details on the grand opening.  KROC-AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The NAACP has announced a series of Black History Month events this February in Rochester. Pulitzer finalist Lee Hawkins will speak at Hilton Rochester, and additional events include a homeownership workshop at RAEDI Offices on February 21 and the Black Excellence Expo at 125 LIVE on February 28.  KIMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, Country Financial sent an email advising homeowners to cover outdoor spigots with foam covers and keep thermostats at 65 degrees as extreme cold is forecast — this tip aims to prevent frozen pipes with affordable covers available at local hardware stores.  KROC-AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rochester Public Utilities launched its new online portal, RPU Connect, today to help customers pay bills and view energy use. General Manager Tim McCollough — on local radio — said about 60% of customers have reset their passwords.  KROC-AM
  • Rochester Public Utilities has asked residents to conserve non-essential electricity over the next 48 hours amid subzero temperatures and high demand; the agency recommends postponing large appliance use (such as laundry and dishwashers) to reduce strain on the regional grid.  KTTC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Radon, a colorless and odorless gas found in 40% of local homes, shows levels 3 times above the national average — posing lung cancer risk. Homeowners are urged to test regularly and install mitigation systems if levels exceed 4.0 pCi/L.  KROC-AM

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A local poll shows Snappy Stop as the favorite French fry spot at 37 9th Street SE and launches the vote for Rochester’s best burger, open until Friday, Jan. 30. The winner will be announced on Feb. 2 on Y-105FM, and residents can vote by phone or the free app.  KROC-AM
